Our History

Melanoma Academy of Australia was founded by clinicians and members of the community whom have a passion for improving the health outcomes at the primary care level for melanoma and skin cancer.  Australia unfortunately holds the title of Melanoma capital of the world and the majority of these cancers are diagnosed and treated in the primary care setting. The memebers of the Melanoma Academy soundly believe that the most good and improvement in our communities health outcomes in regards to Melanoma and Skin Cancer will be achieved through education, investment and research at the primary care and clinic level. 

 

The objects of the association are—

To improve health outcomes and reduce unnecessary death and morbidity in the primary care setting for melanoma and other skin cancers.

Accreditation of skin cancer doctors.

Promote and facilitate melanoma and other skin cancer education for patients and health care professionals

Promote melanoma and skin cancer awareness

Fundraise for melanoma and skin cancer research

Undertake melanoma and skin cancer research

Changing the face of the skin cancer management and education

The Melanoma Academy is an Australian organisation dedicated to reducing Melanoma and skin cancer deaths  By focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of Melanoma and skin cancer in the primary community setting.  The Melanoma Academy focuses on patient and doctor education and community networking, and supporting research for melanoma and skin cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis and management.

To improve the health outcomes of all Australians and reduce unnecessary death and morbidity in the primary care setting for melanoma and all skin cancers.

Mission

Increase public awareness of the early signs of skin cancer.

Increase the ability of medical and non-medical practitioners to recognise and treat skin cancer.

Promote a network of clinicians across Australia committed to primary care skin cancer medicine.

Dr Ryan Harvey

President of Melanoma Academy

Dr Harvey is an experienced doctor with over 15 years’ dedication to the management of skin cancer. Dr Harvey’s goal is to provide professional, timely and affordable skin cancer treatment and excellence in the management of skin cancer.

Dr Harvey grew up on a cattle property in South West Queensland, before completing his secondary school years at boarding school in Brisbane.  Following high school, he completed his Medical Degree at James Cook University (2008) and subsequently completed his internship at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. He completed further training in various other Brisbane and Queensland Hospitals and spent several years working in the United Kingdom.

Dr Harvey holds a Masters in Medicine Skin Cancer,  Masters in Health Economics (University of Queensland) and a Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. In addition to his skin cancer work he is the founder of On Point Skin Cancer clinics and Online Doctor Consult a telemedicine platform and Medical Director of House Call Doctor an after hours home visit doctor service. He has recently completed postgraduate study at Harvard Medical School in the area of leadership in digital transformation in health care. He is an Accredited Skin Cancer doctor with the Skin Cancer College Austalasia.

He is highly committed to improving the management of Melanoma and Skin Cancer across Australia.

Dr Terry Harvey

Vice President of Melanoma Academy

Dr Terry Harvey graduated in medicine from The University of Queensland in 2013 and has since upskilled with postgraduate qualifications in skin cancer medicine, skin cancer surgery, dermatoscopy and histopathology. He holds a Master’s degree in Skin Cancer from The University of Queensland and is an Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor with the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. He practices exclusively in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.

Dr Harvey has a passion for thorough full skin examination and early diagnosis of skin cancer. He has spoken at local and national conferences on topics in advanced skin cancer diagnosis and remains involved in current research into skin cancer screening techniques. Through early diagnosis Dr Harvey provides his patients with greater access to safe and simple treatments to avoid complicated and costly treatments required with delayed diagnosis. His expertise in early diagnosis is recognised through becoming one of very few doctors worldwide to outperform the University of Vienna Dermachallenge artificial intelligence algorithm in accurate skin cancer diagnosis.

Dr Harvey enjoys the opportunity to work with patients and stakeholders that share his interest in reducing the risk and impact of advanced skin cancer through prevention and early diagnosis.

Nathan Smith

Emily Harvey

Board Member

Emily Harvey a highly qualified and experienced physiotherapist with a passion for skin cancer.  Having seen first hand the effects of advanced skin cancer on her patients in a rehabilitation setting, she brings a unique perspective to the field of skin cancer treatment. She has a deep understanding of the physical and emotional challenges that patients with skin cancer and melanoma face, and is dedicated to developing new and innovative treatment and rehabilitation techniques to support their recovery.

 

As a board member of the Melanoma Academy of Australia, Emily is committed to working with other healthcare professionals to improve the overall care and quality of life for those affected by skin cancer and melanoma.  In addition to her advocacy and awareness in the field of skin cancer, Emily is also a dedicated clinician, providing high-quality care in her role as a senior physiotherapist.  With her knowledge, skills and dedication, Emily is an asset to the Melanoma Academy of Australia and will play an important role in advancing the organization’s mission.
